Advances in understanding extracellular electron transfer

Microbial fuel cells are gaining prominence in the transition to environmentally sustainable modes of electricity production. These technologies that rely on the capacity of some microorganisms to perform extracellular electron transfer using a class of proteins called multiheme cytochromes c. Using paramagnetic NMR methods we have recently advanced the molecular understanding of this phenomenon and how it can be optimized for real world applications.
